ON PEACEFUL DEATH & PAINFUL LIFE

This project is based on the life and works of Branwell Bronte.

When researching into the life of the Bronte sisters and visiting Haworth and the Parsonage, I came across their older brother, Branwell. I later grew a connection to Branwell and his work, and with that, I proceeded to investigate key moments in his life. Capturing the state of his mental health, addiction to alcohol and opium, as well as his creative mindset and the inspiration behind his poetry through my images.

This project stays very close to my heart. My work resonates on a number of different levels mostly due to the induced feelings of anxiety and rejection which were what drew me to Branwell in the first place.

During my project I previously researched in depth by looking in the archives of Leeds University, in particular a collection of Branwell's letters and drawings dating between 1842 and 1848. These dates were significant to my work as they cover periods of his creativity, a scandal and the subsequent depression and alcoholism that would contribute to his death. These have made up the focal point of my images.
