PCA DISEASE - PHILOSOPHICAL VISUALIZATION IN SCIENCE & ART THROUGH ABSTRACT IMAGERY

‘Philosophical Visualization In Science & Art Through Abstract Imagery’ is a project that touches on the concept of the progressive deterioration of vision in PCA patients.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of dementia affecting the area of the brain dealing with visual processing. It can be debilitating and is often misunderstood.

During this project I investigated the science behind brain function, memory loss and visual processing. How does the brain communicate with the eye? How is it damaged through PCA? Using abstract imagery, I created a series depicting the idea of how the brain and vision are damaged through PCA.

I researched how art and science have come together through history to identify ways of expressing visual damage through the medium of photography.

The research helped in linking my work to colour theory and abstraction in nature. I developed my images through a scanning technique and microscope photography.

I investigated how I can interpret my findings through artistic imagery, using elements of nature and cell dissection as metaphors for brain function.
